Scottish rams horn snuff mull of the George III period, circa 1820
Gilt interior to the lid.
Apparently the Scott's took to snuffing much earlier than those south 'o the border but it was not made from tobacco.
Dried sneezewort was used in traditional medicine for everything from toothache to flu. This powder was known as sneeshin and it was kept in a miln to keep it dry. This is recorded in the 15th century.
