19th century large Ceylonese specimen wood table
This fine tilt-top table is beautifully inlaid with indigenous woods and ivory with a Greek key pattern design in ivory to the edge of the table.
The stellar inlaid ivory disc to the centre is inscribed with an elephant. From this central medallion are large swirling radiating petals of specimen woods within feather bands including calamander, Ceylon teak, tamarind, ironwood, pol coconut, palm, rosewood, ebony to name but a few.
Much of this furniture design derived from English pattern books but the carved and inlaid work was of local origin.
The whole is raised on the original carved rosewood base with three splay legs with concealed castors.
This object incorporates old ivory and has been registered with Defra.
