19th century gouache picture of a Barque
In 1857 the 'Ann Wilson' had made a voyage to New Zealand taking emigrants to their new life. Sadly out of 222 passengers plus crew, 18 lost their lives due to inadequate food, water, medical provisions and overcrowding on the vessel. Captain Rutherford, who we believe is mentioned in this picture, was found guilty of neglect with regards to poor provisions. The court ordered him to pay fines but he absconded. It is believed he caught a whaling boat at Paliser Bay and boarded the 'Ann Wilson' once again for the return journey home, thus avoiding the payment of the fines.
Spotting to the left hand side of the picture.
