16th century Medieval Walnut Coffer

Exhibition Piece
16th century Medieval Walnut Coffer
Circa 1550
An extremely rare 16th century medieval solid walnut coffer. Gothic art evolved from Romanesque art and lasted from the mid 12th century to the end of the 16th century. This style influenced most of Europe. It was aimed for the very rich.

This article would originally have had polychromed decoration depicting a stained-glass window.
The fine carving shows the brilliant gothic tracery of what you would see in a church window of the period. It retains the original lock-plate and hinges.

The whole is solid walnut and has an excellent toffee colour.
Italian circa 1550
